Age / Disability Exemption
The Homestead Exemption (based on age or disability status)
Taxpayers that own and occupy their residence may receive the exemption if they are 65 years of age or are 100% disabled.
The following requirements must be met to receive the homestead exemption:
- The taxpayer must own and occupy his residence as of January 1st;
- The taxpayer must have been classified as totally 100% disabled under a program authorized or administered by an agency of the United States Government, the Railroad Retirement System or any retirement system within or outside the state of Kentucky as of January 1st and maintain the disability classification through December 31st.
- The taxpayer must be receiving disability payments pursuant to that disability classification.
* The most common government agencies are Social Security/SSI, Tennessee Valley Authority, Veteran's Administration and the Teachers Retirement system. Not included is Worker's Compensation, as they are authorized and administered by the State of Kentucky and not the Federal Government.
